Pittsburgh Steelers legend Franco Harris leads a second line parade with Brenda Frazier during “A Night of a Million Possibilities Featuring Wynton Marsalis” on Nov. 10, 2016, to benefit the Pittsburgh Promise at the Wyndham Grand in Downtown Pittsburgh.

In advance of Tuesday’s public visitation for Steelers legend Franco Harris at Acrisure Stadium, Harris’ family asked fans to make memorial donations to two charities — the Pittsburgh Promise and the Franciscan Sisters of the Poor — instead of sending flowers.

Those who wish to donate can visit the charities’ respective websites at www.pittsburghpromise.org and www.franciscanfoundation.org.

Here are some more details about each charity.

Pittsburgh Promise

The Pittsburgh-based nonprofit said it promotes high educational aspirations for urban youth and helps to train and diversify the regional workforce.

It accomplishes this by providing scholarships — up to $20,000 — to Pittsburgh Public School graduates who can use their scholarships at colleges and trade and technical schools.

Harris sat on the board of Pittsburgh Promise and attended many graduation ceremonies and celebrations with Pittsburgh Public Schools students. The Promise has funded scholarships for more than 11,000 students to date.

Franciscan Sisters of the Poor Foundation

This religious nonprofit is based in New York City but provides services to poor families around the world.

Its website said it also targets health, hunger, women’s empowerment, education and spiritual guidance for marginalized people of all faiths. Harris was an honorary board member of the organization and was known for working with the Franciscan Sisters of the Poor Foundation throughout his life.
