Brittany Reno, left, a current member of Sharpsburg council, won the Democratic nomination for borough mayor. Joe Simbari, right, also a current member of Sharpsburg council, won the Republican nomination as a write-in.

Sharpsburg residents could have a choice for borough Mayor in the November election.

The two-way race for the Democratic nomination between Brittany Reno and Joe Simbari, both current council members, went Reno’s way.

The vote count was 380-287, according to the Allegheny County Elections Department.

Simbari, however, won the Republican nomination with 69 write-in votes.

It was unclear, as of June 17, whether Simbari would accept the nomination and make a bid for the mayor’s office on the Republican ticket.

Simbari said he was waiting for official notification from the elections department before making that call.

“Once I receive that notification and make a final decision, I will make a statement,” he said.

A county elections representative said the write-in votes were certified June 7 and that letters to write-in winners were mailed June 15.

Those who choose to accept the nomination have to get their paperwork notarized and return it to the county by July 2 to appear on the fall ballot.

Reno, who is the first woman in borough history to win the nomination for mayor, said she is pleased that voters were so highly engaged during the election process.

“One of my passions is getting more people involved in the civic process, and this election was an incredible example of civic engagement in action,” she said. “I am deeply honored to have won the nomination.”
