Top stories from across the Lower Valley for the week of Oct. 26

Here’s some of the top stories across the Lower Valley this week:

• Fox Chapel will have a meeting to gather input on “Squaw.”

A meeting will be held Nov. 9 with Fox Chapel officials and residents of Squaw Run Road and Squaw Run Road East to gather input on potentially changing the road names.

There will also be a written survey sent to the same residents, which will be due back Nov. 6.

Some residents have lobbied for the word to be removed, saying it is a slur against Native American women.

Council is expected to vote on the issue Nov. 16.

• Fox Chapel’s Hardie Valley Park is open.

Fox Chapel officials hosted a private opening ceremony to usher in its newest amenity, Hardie Valley Park.

The 17-acre parcel off Old Mill Road is now open to the public.

It is scheduled to undergo a six-year, $3.3 million development with wetland restoration and trail relocation.

• In the age of covid-19, Shady Side Academy livestreams its fall play.

Shady Side Academy students will present “Alice In Wonderland — A Radio Play,” streamed live to accommodate covid-19 restrictions.

The production will begin at 7:30 p.m. on Nov. 6 and 7, and at 2 p.m. on Nov. 8.

• Aspinwall artist lends creativity to Wightman Park in Squirrel Hill.

Alison Zapata, an artist from Aspinwall, helped create four new stainless steel sculptures at Wightman Park in Squirrel Hill.

The exhibit is part of $4.2 million in improvements to the park.
