Here are some of the top stories from across the Lower Valley from the week of Nov. 15:
• Fox Chapel to remove squaw from borough place names
Fox Chapel council voted to eliminate the word squaw from two borough roads and a trail, and also said it would reach out to the federal government to change the name of a local stream.
Squaw Run Road, Squaw Run Road East and Old Squaw Trail will be renamed by May 1.
The stream, Squaw Run, will take longer to address because an application to the USGS is necessary.
• Blawnox earns money to help pay for sewer work
Blawnox was among local municipalities to receive a grant in the latest round of funding from ALCOSAN.
Money was made available through the Green Revitalization of Our Waterways (GROW) program and is part of $15.1 million in grants doled out across the region.
• Fox Chapel Area students going remote for 2 weeks
Fox Chapel Area students will switch to a remote learning model for two weeks because of rising covid-19 cases.
The move will be from Nov. 23 through Dec. 4.
• O’Hara seeking applicants to fill vacancy
O’Hara councilman Scott Frankowski resigned, leaving a vacancy to be filled.
Council is seeking applicants from the 3rd Ward to fill the seat. Anyone interested in filling the vacancy must have lived in the township for at least a year and be a registered Republican, as Frankowski is.
