Three Fox Chapel Area School District students and one recent graduate placed in the 2020 Carnegie Library of Pittsburgh’s Teen Media Awards.

Graduate Anzu Sekikawa was awarded first place and an honorable mention for her 2-D art; junior Alexa Berman won second place and an honorable mention for her 2-D art.

Sophomore Sloane Simon won first place in the music category; seventh-grader Dalisay Quemado won an honorable mention for her 2-D artwork.

More than 200 writers, visual artists, musicians, filmographers and inventors in Allegheny County vied for honors.

Entries were judged by a panel of 33 Carnegie Library of Pittsburgh staff and Learn & Earn teen employees.

FCA deputy superintendent honored

Fox Chapel Area School District Deputy Superintendent David McCommons received the 2020 National Association of School Resource Officers (NASRO) Chief Nicholas Derzis Safe School Leadership Award.

It recognizes contributions and dedication to the School Resource Officer (SRO) program and leadership, innovation, and dedication to taking proactive measures to enhance school safety.

McCommons was nominated for the award by Joseph Kozarian, the district’s chief of school police/school safety and security coordinator, who describes McCommons as being “extremely skilled” in school safety.

McCommons was instrumental in starting the district’s first school police department, which now includes eight school police officers and one safety officer. They are all certified as SROs through NASRO.

The award was presented to McCommons during the virtual 30th Annual NASRO School Safety Conference on Aug.5.

McCommons has been with the district since 2007.

Virtual open house scheduled

Fox Chapel Area High School will host a live, virtual open house Sept. 10 in lieu of the traditional face-to-face event.

Families will be able to follow their student’s schedule of classes remotely and meet each of their teachers.

Access links will be emailed the week of Sept. 7.

The sessions will be live virtual online sessions, not a recorded video.

There will also be optional parent information sessions prior to the open house, beginning at 6 p.m.
