Shady Side Academy students named to all-state music ensembles

Four Shady Side Academy Senior School students have earned places in the Pennsylvania Music Educators Association All-State Festival music ensembles, the highest level a high school musician can achieve.

The following students will perform at the 2023 at the association’s All-State Festival at the Kalahari Resort in The Poconos on April 19-22:

Senior Grant Cummings of Wilkins Township – E-flat Soprano Clarinet, All-State Concert Band. It is the second straight year he was named all-state; last year, he played with the PMEA All-State Wind Ensemble.

Junior Sophia Jho of McCandless – Harp, All-State Orchestra. It was the second straight year that Jho was named PMEA All-State. Last year, Jho was named to the PMEA All-State Wind Ensemble. This year she was named to the PMEA All-State Orchestra. She also will perform with the National Association for Music Education All-Eastern Orchestra in Rochester, N.Y., on April 16.

Senior Hannah Song of O’Hara – Viola, All-State Orchestra. This is the second straight year that Song was selected to perform in the PMEA All-State Orchestra. She also was selected to perform with the National Association for Music Education All-Eastern Orchestra in Rochester, N.Y., on April 13-16.

Junior Hari Viswanathan of Monroeville – Piano, All-State Jazz Ensemble. This is the first year he was named all-state. He is the first SSA student ever named to the All-State Jazz Ensemble.
