Spring programs that include STEAM classes and art lessons begin this week at Lauri Ann West Community Center in O’Hara.
Jamie Rhoades, director of development, said the staff wanted to utilize the Maker Studio for creative, hands-on science- and engineering-related activities, in addition to the usual sports and ballet sessions.
“We’re launching Make & Create classes that include cartooning, painting, watercolor and more,” Rhoades said.
“The program allows Fox Chapel Area School District students to come to the center on the bus right after school for four-week classes.”
Sessions run from 4 to 5:45 p.m.
The cost is $105 for members and $115 for nonmembers.
Recent mild temperatures and a prolonged period of pandemic-related house confinement appear to have prompted local families to seek out options for engagement, Rhoades said.
“We’ve seen a lot of demand for our youth programming, particularly our outdoor classes like flag football and soccer,” she said.
Space is limited for all classes, both indoor and outdoor, to ensure social distancing.
Rhoades said safety is a priority and the center will be following covid-19 guidelines.
“We take every precaution possible to make this a safe but fun experience for the kids,” she said.
The center has been a place for refuge during the pandemic, with its modified offerings of summer camp and afterschool activities.
Programs have been offered at reduced capacity to allow for social distancing among children.
Registration is open at lauriannwestcc.org.
