Sharpsburg Community Library is expanding its hours and offering in-person programs for fall. Shown here is Christine Kuang, right, as she works with her two sons, Tim Kuang, 6, and Ted Kuang, 10, left, of O’Hara, during a Carnegie Science Center Science in the Summer event July 20.

Patrons of the Sharpsburg Community Library will be able to visit the Main Street site more often each week, beginning Sept. 13.

The library is expanding its hours, opening its doors in the evenings and resuming a schedule similar to the one it had pre-pandemic, Manager Sara Mariacher said.

“Our new hours will provide more options for residents to utilize the library, including morning and evening hours,” she said. “While masks are still required, we hope this return to regular library hours and programs will provide a sense of normalcy to our community.”

New hours are 1 to 7 p.m. Mondays and Wednesdays, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays, and 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturdays.

The library is closed Fridays and Sundays.

Mariacher said library staff is looking forward to in-person fall programs, with the addition of daily after-school sessions for elementary students and twice-monthly Saturday family programs. Those are in addition to existing adult book clubs which include the speculative fiction club at 7 p.m. on the third Wednesday of each month and the mystery club at 7 p.m. on the fourth Tuesday of each month.

The after-school sessions are geared for students in kindergarten through fifth grade, with trendy topics, such as Minecraft, LEGO and coding.

Programs run from 4:30 to 5:30 p.m. Mondays to Thursdays and have room for 10 participants.

Most will take place outdoors in the library courtyard.

Family programs will be the first and third Saturdays of each month, giving all ages time to build and create in two separate sessions from 11 a.m. to noon, and noon to 1 p.m.

For the youngest learners, the library will have classes from 10:30 to 11 a.m. on select weekdays.

Caregivers and children can participate in the “Wiggle Time” and “STEAM storytime” offered Tuesdays and Wednesdays, respectively.
