Portion of Sharpsburg's Main Street to close through March
A long-term closure of Main Street in Sharpsburg is expected to begin Tuesday.
Road construction will begin at 6 a.m., with crews working to install sanitary and stormwater sewer lines, PennDOT announced.
Specifically, traffic will be detoured between Sixth and Eighth streets.
Work is part of a $3.8 million improvement project through which crews will work to reduce combined sewer overflows.
The upgrades will alleviate water flowing from the Ravine Street stream and Route 28. Crews will also perform paving, curb ramp construction and utility adjustments.
The project is expected to last through March.
The suggested detour is to use Clay and Garnier streets. From Main Street, drivers will turn onto Sixth Street and then onto Clay Street, before turning on to Eighth and back to Main.
Trucks are advised to cross the Highland Park Bridge to North Route 8 toward Butler Street, then to the 62nd Street Bridge and the ramp back toward Sharpsburg.
Eastbound truck drivers who use Main Street should be aware that it is difficult to turn around if their vehicle goes beyond 23rd Street in Sharpsburg.
Port Authority of Allegheny County buses will not be allowed to use the car detour route. A construction shuttle service will provide transit riders service along Main Street in Sharpsburg during all regular Port Authority service hours.
Shuttles will take passengers to hubs at North Main Street at Bridge Street under the 62nd Street Bridge in Etna and to Brilliant Avenue at Freeport Road in Aspinwall.
Motorists should be aware that traffic on other borough streets could be limited to single lanes during off-peak hours.
