A portion of Kittanning Street in Etna will closed for about a month beginning Oct. 26.

A stormwater project off Kittanning Street in Etna will close a portion of the road for about a month.

Work is expected to begin Oct. 26 and will target the section between Sharps Hill Road and Route 8, where recent paving was diverting stormwater and causing the road to deteriorate.

Allison Park Contractors will be installing new catch basins between Greismere and Catherine streets, Etna Manager Mary Ellen Ramage said.

Etna’s troubles started after PennDOT’s most recent paving of Kittanning Street, a state road.

“We began having issues with Snyder Street and a rapid deterioration at the sole entrance and exit to this residential area,” Ramage said.

The neighborhood includes homes in Etna and Shaler.

Ramage said crews were able to pinpoint the source of the road mishaps to stormwater runoff.

“It was, due to the paving, heading straight to this roadway entrance as well as other areas above this street,” she said.

Work on the project will be weather dependent, and residents that live within the work zone will have access to the road.

In other news, leaf collection in Etna will run through Nov. 20.

Residents should place leaf piles at the curb and make sure vehicles are moved from the sweeping area.

The schedule followed by public works will be:

• Mondays, Bittner Plan

• Tuesdays: Dewey and Vilsack streets

• Wednesdays: Pine to Walnut streets and all roads in between; Kittanning Street to Griesmere Street area

• Thursdays: Parker and Washington streets

• Fridays: Cherry and Sycamore streets

Leaves that are left at the curb after Nov. 20 will not be hauled away because the borough trucks will be converted for snow plowing, Ramage said.
