A Peoples natural gas project in Sharpsburg is expected to begin Monday borough officials announced.

Crews will be installing a new gas main and service line.

Borough officials said work will begin near First Street on South Main Street and move toward Main Street before turning east on Main Street.

The South Main Street work is expected to be done during the hours of 7 a.m. and 5 p.m. and take four to six weeks. One lane of traffic will be closed.

Initial work includes exploratory potholing to ensure the pipe can be installed in a straight line once they start trenching.

It is likely that two excavators/backhoes will be staged on the street and that four parking spots will be used for the equipment.

Borough officials said they do not have a solid timeline for the project after crews turn onto Main Street.

Peoples Gas spokesman Nick Paradise said Friday the construction team estimates 120 days for project completion, but that might change based on what happens along South Main Street.

“They’ll be learning additional information that will factor in to the timeline to complete the second leg of the work,” he said. “This is one of our infrastructure modernization projects to replace aged pipelines with new lines made of state-of-the-art materials for greater safety and reliability of service, as well as reducing greenhouse gas emissions.”

Paradise declined to disclose the cost of the project.

Waste Management has been notified of the project.

People who live in the impacted areas are urged to have their trash out the night before collection or very early on Tuesdays.

If your trash is missed, call the borough at 412-781-0546 and select option 1 to speak with someone from the administration office.

Borough officials said such notification needs to be made by Wednesday so they can get Waste Management to send a recovery truck, which they do by Thursday.

A notice about the project was posted to the borough website, sharpsburgborough.com.

Peoples plans to make upgrades to 3,000 miles of aging pipeline by 2034.

More information about those modernization efforts is available at peoples-gas.com/modernization.
