Democratic newcomer Corey Ochai earned a victory in his race for Sharpsburg Council, beating Republican Diana Oliver.

Ochai earned 484 votes to Oliver’s 234. The term is two years.

“I am beyond honored to be elected to serve this amazing community,” said Ochai, 37.

“I’m excited to be working alongside this amazing team of people I admire.”

Other races in the borough were uncontested.

The founder of OCHi Productions, Ochai ran on the platform of strengthening communication between residents and council.

“This win doesn’t belong to me, it belongs to Sharpsburg,” he said. “As an individual, I can’t change anything, but we as a collective have the potential to make this community more prosperous for the residents.”

Ochai moved into the borough 13 years ago and plans to remain there. He is eager to wear a variety of hats in his new role, but the ones he is most excited about are that of student and team-builder.

“Before you can solve any problem, it is important to understand it,” he said. “My job at this moment is to be studious.

“I’m extremely confident that Sharpsburg Council will welcome me with open arms and provide me with all of the tools to make this transition harmonious.”
