Guyasuta Area Youth Football took to the field for a series of 9/11 Memorial Games and played hard-fought football, all the while keeping in mind the sacrifice of those who fought a larger battle 22 years ago.

“We came together with Rams Youth Football to honor the memory of the lives lost and those that were forever changed on that fateful morning in 2001,” said Guyasuta volunteer Samantha Iusi.

“As we remembered the tragedies that unfolded, we also came together in the spirit of unity, resilience and compassion — values that truly define the American spirit.”

Guyasuta is a nonprofit whose mission is to bring together residents to promote football and cheerleading with the overarching themes of positive relationship skills, good sportsmanship and community pride, Iusi said.

The organization is celebrating its 40th year.

Iusi said the players took time to remember “the brave men and women who ran toward danger, without a moment’s hesitation, with the sole purpose of saving lives.

“We honored the first responders who made the ultimate sacrifice, the firefighters, police officers, paramedics and everyday citizens who became beacons of hope.”

Football teaches the children many valuable lessons, she said. They include teamwork, discipline, perseverance and the importance of never giving up.

“It reminds us that even when faced with challenges, we can rise above, united as one team. And that is what the Memorial Games are: two rival teams coming together as one,” Iusi said.

“The young athletes that gathered represent the hope and promise of our nation’s future.”
