Good Friday fish fry happening in Sharpsburg
Main Street in Sharpsburg will be a little busier today as crowds flock to the Good Friday fish fry hosted by the volunteer fire department.
Assistant Chief Mike Daniher said volunteers have nearly 800 pieces of fish ready to drop into the fryers.
Slaw, pierogies and fries are chopped, stuffed and sliced, he said.
“We usually get a really nice crowd,” Daniher said. “We always sell out.”
Volunteers will begin dishing out meals at 11 a.m. at the fire hall, 1611 Main St.
Because of covid-19 restrictions, food will be distributed by pickup and delivery only. Members will deliver meals until 5 p.m. but takeout will continue through 7 p.m.
Hungry customers can get a fish sandwich for $7 or a shrimp basket for $5.
Dinners — fish or shrimp – include French fries and coleslaw and cost $10 or $8, respectively.
In addition, sides will be sold a la carte. Fries or pierogies cost $3, and homemade slaw or mac and cheese costs $2.
“The coleslaw is homemade,” Daniher said.
Fundraiser proceeds are used to help pay for new equipment at the department, which serves about 3,500 residents in the borough and provides mutual aid to neighboring communities.
The two dozen or so members respond to up to 300 calls a year.
