Girl Scout Troop 52231, all students at Dorseyville Middle School, built a little library for the Aspinwall playground.

Settling down with a good page-turner will be easier now for residents in Aspinwall and O’Hara thanks to the efforts of Girl Scout Troop 52231.

Members constructed three little libraries which were installed at the Aspinwall playground and Fireman’s Park, and at Lauri Ann West Community Center on Powers Run Road.

“I hope people can take advantage of the libraries during this time when the libraries are still somewhat closed,” troop member Zehra Ozkaya said.

The 11 members, all seventh-graders at Dorseyville Middle School, set out to earn the Girl Scout Silver Award but were thwarted when the covid-19 pandemic hit in spring.

Parent Tina DiGioia said the girls couldn’t meet the award deadline but they still wanted to complete the project as a means of community service.

In addition to Ozkaya, other troop members include Atia DiGioia, Alana Calig, Alexandra Schlegel, Ayla Ojanen, Emma DiRocco, Eugenia Mettenburg, Mika Goldberg, Nora Kelley, Samantha Dinh and Vesta Homayoun.

Anthony Allison, community center executive director, said he was excited to receive the handmade gift and was proud to install it near the entrance so it is accessible for all visitors.

“We appreciate the Girl Scouts coming to us with this fun opportunity to help promote reading in our community,” Allison said. “There are so many people of all ages who come to the community center on any given day, and I think everyone will be able to benefit from this gift.”

Similarly, Aspinwall Manager Melissa Lang-O’Malley said the borough can only benefit from the gesture that promotes literacy, community and generosity.

Troop members designed a blue and yellow box to be placed at the borough’s Fireman’s Park at the top of Center Avenue because they thought the colors would be cheerful and inviting.

At the playground off Field Avenue, they chose a fairy theme that would delight the small children who play there.

“We hope the community enjoys them,” member Atia DiGioia said.
