Free glass recycling coming to Hartwood Acres
A traveling glass recycling bin will be available at Hartwood Acres this summer.
The program provides a free recycling option for people to rid their houses of glass bottles, jars and jugs of all colors. No sorting is required.
The bin will be at the Indiana Township park July 8-13.
It will be open from 7 a.m. to sundown in the amphitheater overflow lot along Middle Road.
The program, a partnership between Allegheny County and the Pennsylvania Resources Council, aims to reduce the amount of glass in landfills.
“Over the past few years, many of our municipal partners have had to remove glass recycling from their offerings because of the increased costs and challenges with that recycling stream,” County Executive Rich Fitzgerald said.
“Recycling glass, however, is good for our community.”
Fitzgerald said it reduces air and water pollution from creating new glass.
“I’m thrilled that we’re able to again offer this program and welcome residents to explore our county parks while they’re there,” Fitzgerald said.
More than 7.6 tons — 16,755 pounds — of glass were recycled through the traveling event last year.
The program kicks off this week, with a bin at Boyce Park in Monroeville through Feb. 16.
It continues in spring, with a container at Settlers Cabin in South Park from April 15-20, followed by May 20-25 at Round Hill Park and June 3-8 at Deer Lakes Park.
Other dates can be found on the county website, alleghenycounty.us.
Containers should be empty and rinsed, with lids and labels still on. Bags and boxes should not be discarded into the recycling bin.
