The Fox Chapel Parks Conservancy will launch this year’s seasonal fundraisers with a unique event that draws people into nature with a twist.
Fire & Ice at McCahill Park on Hemlock Hollow Road will highlight a space that traditionally is enjoyed for its baseball fields and playground.
“The park will be transformed under the night sky with illuminated ice sculptures and pathways of lanterns guiding visitors to wander through the park and enjoy the sights and sounds of the natural world after dark,” coordinator Beth Vukmir said.
The free event, presented by UPMC St. Margaret hospital and landscapers Eichenlaub Inc., is slated for 4 to 9 p.m. Jan. 28. It is the fifth in a series of events across Fox Chapel parks.
“I think it may be the best of all the events so far,” Mayor Alex Scott III said. “I think it’s going to draw a lot of people, give people something to do in the winter and get them out with their families. It builds awareness of the Parks Conservancy and what we’re doing.”
Newly elected state Rep. Mandy Steele, D-Fox Chapel, helped to establish the parks conservancy. She said parks are an essential component of the beauty and well-being in local communities.
Since the covid-19 pandemic, more families have enjoyed the borough’s park and trail system than ever before, Steele said.
“The conservancy was established to provide our community with an easy way to invest in the continued care and protection of our beloved park spaces, and to help fund future park expansion,” she said.
Chairwoman Marcia Haberman is hoping the outdoor event will give families a chance to pause and connect with nature, especially after the holiday season.
“The ice sculptures will be carved to showcase a variety of plant and animal species that are native to our area, courtesy of generous donations from our local businesses and partners,” she said.
The event will provide a gathering space for folks to enjoy hot chocolate and fireside hospitality.
“This event will be a true reflection of our goal at the conservancy,” Steele said. “To make the connection with residents of the borough, and beyond, in celebration of these spaces and in support of future conservation efforts. Our parks are for everyone, and everyone is welcome.”
Parking and road closures
Police will be on-site to help with traffic and event parking. Drivers are asked to park in the parking lot or along the split rail fence.
The parking lot will be closed to the public beginning at 11 a.m. Jan. 28. Hemlock Hollow Road will be closed between Guyasuta and Hunt roads from 3 to 10 p.m.
Traffic going north on Hemlock Hollow will have to turn onto either Field Club Road or Guyasuta Road starting at 3 p.m.
Traffic going south will have to make a right turn onto Hunt Road.
Signs will be posted near the park.
Feb. 4 was earmarked as the event’s rain date in case of bad weather.
