Fox Chapel Area students win speech championships

Three Fox Chapel Area High School students won state championships at the Pennsylvania High School Speech League Championship March 17-18 at Commonwealth University of PA’s Bloomsburg University.

Junior Isabella White won first place in Commentary and the team of junior Adhitya Thirumala and sophomore Moonyoung Hwang were named state champions in Policy Debate.

In the News Broadcasting event, the team of senior Sonny Hur and sophomore Swati Mylarappa won sixth place.

Nearly 575 students representing 78 public, private, and charter high schools from across the state participated.

At the Pittsburgh Diocese Catholic Forensic League national qualifying tournament held March 4 at Fox Chapel Area High School, Thirumala and Hwang won sixth place overall and qualified for the National Catholic Forensic League Grand National Championship Tournament in Louisville on Memorial Day weekend.

White won seventh place in Extemporaneous Speaking, and senior Sonny Hur won seventh place in Lincoln-Douglas Debate. They are first alternates to the national tournament. Freshman Ulyana Kubini won eighth place at the qualifying tournament and is the second alternate to the national championships.

Approximately 160 students from 14 regional public and private high schools participated.
