Fox Chapel area student news: Covid-19 cases reported; meeting schedule and more
Fox Chapel Area School District reported 36 confirmed and probable covid-19 cases in the schools as of Dec. 16.
The district reports its cases in a rolling 14-day period and counts a case only if the person was physically in the building while infectious.
In December, the high school saw the most cases so far with 17, followed by 10 at Dorseyville Middle School.

The Fox Chapel Area School Board will meet for a combined agenda and business meeting 7 p.m. Jan. 11. The meeting can be attended online or by phone.

Shady Side Academy Country Day School students collected more than 400 non-perishable food items for The Pressley Ridge Backpack Giveback program, which supplies food to struggling families and basic necessities to children, in foster care.
The collection was held Dec. 7-11 and during the last day of the event, students were encouraged to donate $1 to enjoy a dress-down day.
They raised $250 which was used by School Head Dr. Jennifer Asmonga and school counselor Claudine Runette to deliver a Panera Bread lunch to the doctors and nurses at UPMC St. Margaret’s Hospital.

Shady Side Academy Middle School Science Olympiad team placed third out of 59 teams in their division at the virtual Northview Invitational on Dec. 13.
The following students earned top 10 finishes in their events, including two first-place finishes: Jeffrey Brunner and Evan Xiang: 1st for Boomilever, Rohan Shrishrimal and Hari Viswanathan: 1st for Write It CAD It, Rohan Shrishrimal and Hari Viswanathan: 2nd for Reach for the Stars, Sophia Jho and Hari Viswanathan: 3rd for Fossils, Maya Agarwal and Andrew Zeng: 3rd for Game On, Sophia Gombos and Evan Xiang: 3rd for Meteorology, Ethan Hou, Rohan Shrishrimal and Hari Viswanathan: 4th for Experimental Design, Maya Agarwal and Sophia Jho: 5th for Ornithology, Ethan Chen and Shaurya Gulati: 7th for Crime Busters, Ian Mocker and Andrew Zeng: 7th for Machines, Ethan Chen and Ian Mocker: 8th for Food Science, Jeffrey Brunner and Evan Xiang: 8th for Mousetrap Vehicle, Shaurya Gulati and Evan Xiang: 9th for Dynamic Planet, Ethan Hou and Rohan Shrishrimal: 9th for Water Quality, and Shaurya Gulati and Andrew Zeng: 10th for Density Lab.
Science Olympiad is a national nonprofit organization dedicated to improving the quality of K-12 science education.
The SSA team is lead by coaches Bonnie Maxwell, Matt Brunner, Paul Waked and Chris Erler.
