Christmas in Guyasuta at Sharpsburg campground offers winter wonderland to kick off holiday season
The 175-acre Boy Scout-owned campground tucked behind Sharpsburg’s business district was busy transforming into a winter wonderland, even though temperatures were climbing into the high 60s.
That didn’t stop Camp Guyasuta Ranger Mike Daniher from prepping the fire pits and readying the horse-drawn carriage for a Nov. 25 seasonal extravaganza.
Christmas in Guyasuta happens one day each year and is filled with winter-themed fun for all ages.
“There’s no better way to get into the Christmas spirit than to start the holiday season with us,” Daniher said.
The event is from 4 to 9 p.m. at the campgrounds, accessed off 23rd Street.
Jolly St. Nick will await visitors and pose for photos.
There also will be a bonfire, letter-writing to Santa, games, crafts and concessions.
Participants will be driven through a twinkling display of lights aboard a trolley.
New this year, for more adventurous visitors 11 and older, will be ziplining among the holiday lights with an illuminated 700-foot ride. The fan-favorite Climbing Wall Under the Lights also will be available.
“I am so happy to invite the community to kick off the holiday season,” Daniher said.
The staff genuinely enjoys seeing families, from grandparents to toddlers, enjoying the camp, he said.
Volunteer George Shaffer doesn’t mind the hard work leading up to the event.
“I enjoy watching all the families having fun,” he said. “I also enjoy seeing some of our campers bring their families to show them around and participate together.”
The Camp Trading Post will be open throughout the event, and vendors will sell crafts and various food items.
Advance tickets can be purchased online for $15 through Nov. 23.
The cost will be $20 on Nov. 24 and at the door. The event is snow, rain or shine.
