Blawnox seeks code enforcement officer to help keep town in shape
Blawnox is seeking to hire a code enforcement officer — and the search is becoming a bit frustrating for administration officials after not being able to fill the position for at least eight months.
“It’s been a struggle,” Manager Kathy Ulanowicz said. “Code enforcement is one of the most important things that a community does, and we want to get someone in that position.”
The job is part time, about six to eight hours a week.
The pay is $15 an hour.
A code enforcement officer helps maintain the integrity of communities by making sure property owners are keeping their spaces clean and safe. Cutting grass, keeping properties free of junk cars and shoveling snow in a timely manner are some of the items that make the list.
“They drive around the community to see that trash isn’t left out or properties don’t have anything hazardous going on,” Ulanowicz said.
The new hire also will respond to complaints, which is something Ulanowicz and Assistant Manager Mallori McDowell currently are charged with handling.
“It’s tough because we have to go out and check on things when we really need someone who this is their whole responsibility,” Ulanowicz said.
The borough’s most recent code enforcement officer, Jeff Armstrong, left in February.
Applicants must have a valid driver’s license and their own vehicle. They do not have to be residents of the borough.
The new staffer also will be responsible for sending warning notices to violators, writing tickets and attending hearings at the magistrate’s office.
Council in 2019 approved a Quality of Life ordinance so the borough would have solid backing for cracking down on eyesores and safety hazards.
According to the ordinance, violators get a courtesy warning before a ticket.
Fines start at $25 for first offenses and can grow to $100 before a hearing is scheduled.
Anyone interested in applying for the job can contact the borough office at 412-828-4141.
