For Lisa Florian, being involved with the Greater Pittsburgh Community Food Bank is personal.
“Growing up, my family was no stranger to standing in line at the food bank. I personally am grateful to be able to give back where I once had to receive,” said Florian, the senior vice president for digital strategy and marketing at Clearview Federal Credit Union.
After her parents divorced, Florian’s family experienced food insecurity and visited pantries just down the street from where the food bank sits today.
“There were times when we had to rely on certain assistance. My mom would bundle us up, me and my twin brothers, and we would probably take a cab to a food pantry in McKeesport and we would stand in line and wait for bags of groceries,” Florian said. “My mom was trying to get back on her feet after a divorce.”
This motivated Florian to be involved in hunger-relief efforts. Clearview became formally involved with the food bank in 2019, and the partnership has continued to expand, including sponsoring the food podcast.
“After one of our staff volunteer days packing boxes, we realized it was more than just that day for us,” Florian said. “We wanted to become partners on a greater level.”
During the covid-19 pandemic, Clearview employees have volunteered at the food bank facility in Duquesne, at drive-up food distributions and at local pantries.
Florian said her own experience gives her compassion for those facing food insecurity, especially over the past year.
“Not only does that make you appreciate what folks go through because it’s kind of an array of emotions as a child, wondering why we weren’t at the grocery store and we were seeing people give things to us. It’s nice to be able to take that full circle and give back.”
Clearview plans to continue its partnership, engaging employees to give back through volunteering and sharing information about ways for the community to also get involved with the Food Bank.
Clearview offers an online giving platform on its website for members and the community. Donations can be made at clearviewcares.blackbaud-sites.com.
