Food Podcast: 2nd Feed the Need radiothon marks 1-year covid response
The Greater Pittsburgh Community Food Bank is partnering with Entercom Media and Giant Eagle for the second Feed the Need radiothon.
The radiothon, which will come on the one-year anniversary of the Food Bank’s initial covid response, aims to support those using drive-up distribution sites and food pantries in the Pittsburgh region.
Last year’s radiothon provided more than 1.5 million meals to the region.
The Giant Eagle Feed the Need radiothon will be broadcast Tuesday, March 16, from 5 a.m. to 6 p.m. on the four Entercom Pittsburgh stations: 100.1 FM and 1020 AM (KDKA-AM), 93.7 The Fan (KDKA-FM), 100.7 Star (WBZZ-FM) and Y108 (WDSY-FM).
“We are grateful for the continued support of Entercom, especially during the pandemic over the past year,” said Lisa Scales, president and CEO of Greater Pittsburgh Community Food Bank.
During the radiothon, the stations will broadcast live with interviews and updates on the fundraising effort and encourage listeners to donate.
“Pittsburghers are there for each other when there is need. Radio reaches into our community and we want to use our voice to serve our great city,” said Michael Spacciapolli, senior vice president and market manager, Entercom Pittsburgh.
The need across southwestern Pennsylvania increased dramatically because of covid-19, according to the Food Bank. The pandemic resulted in a 42% increase in food insecurity in the region.
The Food Bank provided nearly 37 million pounds of food to 11 counties in Southwestern Pennsylvania last year.
Melissa Murray, of the Greater Pittsburgh Community Food Bank, hosts this week’s Food Podcast and discusses the one-year mark of the start of the pandemic and how the Food Bank has responded to the crisis. She speaks with Spacciapolli about the radio company’s radiothon.
