Three motorists were taken to the hospital Thursday after a three-vehicle crash on the Parkway East in Pittsburgh shot one car into oncoming traffic and flipped a dump truck over a hill, authorities said.
The crash occurred when an eastbound dump truck and sedan collided on Interstate 376 about 11:25 a.m. as traffic slowed to a crawl approaching the Squirrel Hill Tunnel, Pennsylvania State Police Trooper Rocco Gagliardi said.
The dump truck veered right across three lanes of traffic and launched over a hillside, Gagliardi said.
The sedan went in the opposite direction and over the highway’s concrete barrier into oncoming traffic, where it struck an SUV, Gagliardi said.
Gagliardi did not know whether the dump truck or sedan was in front, or how fast they were going.
The crash occurred near Exit 73, where off-ramps lead motorists to Route 885 in the city’s South Oakland neighborhood.
Multiple lanes of traffic were closed temporarily. Traffic was flowing again by about 1:30 p.m., Gagliardi said.
A tow truck later helped pull the dump truck onto Second Avenue below, he said. The truck was empty at the time of the crash.
Gagliardi said the drivers had minor injuries.
State police are investigating.
