Council approves expansion of Pittsburgh's Allegheny River Greenway
Pittsburgh’s Allegheny River Greenway will grow to include two dozen additional lots.
City Council on Tuesday unanimously approved a measure that will add the vacant, city-owned parcels to the existing greenspace. Councilman Ricky Burgess, D-Point Breeze, was not present for the vote.
Councilwoman Deb Gross, D-Highland Park, who sponsored the measure, said the additional properties are considered to be at risk of potential landslides and should not be developed. Adding them to the existing greenspace, she said, ensures they’re not developed, which could increase the risk of potentially damaging landslides that could impact nearby property owners.
Allegheny River Greenway already includes 35 acres of noncontiguous greenspace in the city’s Upper Lawrenceville and Stanton Heights neighborhoods.
Volunteer groups have expressed interest in creating trails through the newly-added properties, Gross said.
The new properties being added to the greenspace are located on Keystone, Wickliff, 56th, Carnegie, 57th and Duncan streets.
