Comcast announced the expansion of its fiber-based network to about 3,000 additional homes and businesses in Marshall and Pine.

Construction is ongoing with some residents already able to connect to Xfinity residential and Comcast business services, the company announced March 25.

“This project, in addition to our expansion in Cranberry Township, provides important broadband connections that support the educational, professional and personal lives of Route 19-corridor residents,” said Ricky Frazier Jr., senior vice president for Comcast’s Keystone Region.

On Nov. 6, Pine supervisors voted to formally enter into a franchise agreement with Comcast.

The Philadelphia-based telecommunications and media conglomerate first brought business services to Cranberry, Marshall and Pine in 2020. Comcast later expanded its Xfinity residential services in Cranberry, where construction is in progress.

At the end of 2023, Comcast notified Pine about intentions to expand services the township. Comcast and the township went through a formal approval process that is governed by the state Public Utility Commission.

“This process resulted in the utility provider’s expansion approval into the western portion of the township (around the Route 19 corridor), with the potential to expand further throughout Pine in the future,” township manager Jason Kratsas said.

“By state law, utility companies can locate their services within the road right of way by following a permit process outlined in the township code and the PUC regulations,” he explained. “In the upcoming months, Pine will be working with Comcast as they begin installing their service lines.”

Comcast will have the responsibility to restore any affected areas per the requirements of the permit, according to Kratsas.

“While Pine will be managing the permit, residents should expect to hear directly from Comcast and its project managers as they move forward with their project,” he said.

Comcast serves more than 125 municipalities in Allegheny County. Over the last several years, Comcast expanded its network to more than 315,000 additional homes and businesses across the state.
