Two Chartiers Valley High School students joined the school board to provide updates on student affairs.

The board on Sept. 24 welcomed Layla Asbury and Brady Baranowski.

Asbury, 16, of Bridgeville, is a junior. She is involved in school theater and is the social chair of Student Council.

“Due to my position in Student Council, I have become very involved with working with administration, specifically the principal,” she said. “I saw becoming an advisor to the school board as the only logical next step.”

Outside of school, she is a docent at the Bradford House and a member of the League of Women Voters.

“I hope to help the school board stay connected with the student body and better understand what is going on in my school district,” she said.

Upon graduation from Chartiers Valley, Asbury plans to attend Duquesne University for secondary social studies education and to become a history teacher.

Baranowski, 18, of Scott Township, is in his third year of being a board representative.

He is involved in many extracurriculars, which include being the senior class president, a member of the showband, SADD (Students Against Destructive Decisions), Student Council and Interact Club.

“I want to be involved with the school board because I think it is very important that students be involved in something that directly affects their education and their community,” Baranowski said. “From this experience, I hope to gain better public speaking skills and other professional tactics important in life after high school.”

After high school, Baranowksi said he hopes to attend college and earn a degree in nutrition and dietetics with the goal of becoming a registered dietitian and nutritionist.
