Chartiers Valley’s high and middle school campus will be staffed with security personnel.

According to Superintendent Daniel Castagna, once students enter the buildings for normal morning arrival, the security booth’s arm — located on the driveway to the schools from Thoms Run Road — will be lowered, and all visitors will be stopped and questioned.

The protocol took effect Monday, March 3.

Guards will have direct communication with building principals, office staff and school resource officers, Castagna said.

The security booth allows the guard to see exterior security cameras for surveillance.

In addition, a marked roving vehicle will patrol all four district buildings throughout the day, with an emphasis on exterior entrances at the high school and student parking lots, Castagna said.

The primary, middle and high schools are all located along Thoms Run Road in Collier. The intermediate school and administration office is located off Swallow Hill Road in Scott.

Castagna said the adjusted security protocols fall within the approved budget to increase security at all facilities.

“This new procedure will slow down visitor entry, but please understand that this inconvenience will increase the safety of our campus,” he said.

In November, a teenager was charged after making threats against Chartiers Valley High School that prompted two virtual learning days.
