State funding will assist Scott officials in upgrading traffic signal equipment at a few intersections in the township.

PennDOT officials announced the township will receive just under $650,000 for traffic signal improvements to Bower Hill and Painters Run roads, and Bower Hill and Rockhill roads. The money comes from PennDOT’s Green Light-Go Program, which is designed to improve safety, reduce congestion and improve traffic flow.

“These upgrades will not only improve traffic flow and safety but will also have a positive impact on the community,” said Denise Fitzgerald, Scott’s manager.

Most of the equipment at Bower Hill and Rockhill is from its original installation in 1983, according to Fitzgerald.

“The project will be innovative in its use of state-of-the-art traffic signal equipment, including the latest generation of computerized traffic signal controllers, accessible pedestrian push-button and countdown pedestrian signal heads, and cutting-edge digital wave radar vehicular detection — all of which combine to improve safety and mobility,” Fitzgerald said.

Planned improvements include replacing traffic lights, as well as pedestrian signal lights and push-buttons.

The project also is cost-effective, Fitzgerald said.

“Traffic signal upgrades will replace much of the signal hardware, dramatically reducing maintenance requirements, restoring operational reliability and eliminating the concern of catastrophic failure,” she said.

Similar improvements are slated at Bower Hill and Painters Run.

In 2022, Scott received just over $295,000 from the Green Light-Go Program to replace the traffic signal at Cochran Road and Robinwood Drive.

Scott was planning to award a bid for work at the Cochran and Robinwood intersection last month, but the township did not receive any bids, so it will have to rebid, Fitzgerald said. The township still anticipates work on that intersection to start in the fall.

The Bower Hill and Rockhill project will start next year, she said.
