Chartiers Valley musicians enjoy experience of playing with Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra

Six Chartiers Valley High School musicians got to learn from the professionals during a side-by-side performance with the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra in April.

The students — Maddie Cioccio, clarinet; Gwen Horzempa, viola; Milla Konakchieva, violin; Wesley Madge, percussion; Kamilla Ruslankyzy, violin; and Camryn Welsh, violin — were part of PSO’s side-by-side concert that took place April 8 at Heinz Hall.

The student side-by-side program gives student musicians the chance to rehearse and perform with PSO musicians, according to PSO. This year’s concert included 54 students from 32 schools across 12 counties in Southwestern Pennsylvania and West Virginia. Students apply and are selected into the program.

Konakchieva, a senior, has participated in the program three times. Welsh, also a senior, has participated twice.

“It’s just such a cool experience to not only play with new people, but professionals,” Welsh said.

Konakchieva said the experience gives young musicians the opportunity to learn new things from professionals, and play more advanced music.

“It’s cool to play stuff actual symphonies play,” Konakchieva said.

Both students said they enjoyed meeting and getting to know other students and professionals.

“The experience of being able to play with these people who have studied at world-renowned conservatories, it’s amazing to learn from them,” Welsh said.
