Burlington will be relocating to the former Kaufmann’s building in Downtown Pittsburgh.

The developer of the historic Kaufmann’s building has signed Burlington to lease a portion of the building that also will include a Target store.

The art deco building is between Fifth and Forbes avenues and Smithfield Street and Cherry Way in the heart of Downtown Pittsburgh. Its large bronze clock at the corner of Fifth and Smithfield has been a landmark meeting place for decades in the city.

“We are excited to have Burlington on board to share our vision of re-energizing the downtown corridor,” said Leonard Klehr, vice-chairman of Lubert Adler Partners, the Philadelphia-based developer working on the project.

Burlington will move from its present Sixth Avenue location. Burlington’s entrance will be at the corner of Smithfield and Forbes, according to Lubert Adler.

Perhaps best known for its coats, New Jersey-based Burlington Stores, Inc., is a publicly traded bargain retailer with net sales of $5.8 billion in 2020. It operates more than 700 stores in 45 states and Puerto Rico.

Construction on Burlington’s portion of the building will start once the necessary permits are required.

Burlington will join Target as anchor retailers of the first floor of the 13 story building, which also includes more than 300 apartments.

Target’s entrance will be near the historic clock. The 22,000-square-foot Target space is expected to open in 2022, according to Lubert Adler.

It will be one of the Minneapolis-based retailers smaller stores as the company ventures into markets like downtowns and college campuses. The store intends to tailor its product line to the Downtown Pittsburgh market, it has said in meetings to gain local approval of its plans.

“We’re excited to bring an easy, convenient shopping experience to additional guests in the community with this new Target store,” Target spokeswoman Aryn Ridge has said previously.

The plans have the support of local officials, who have said Target’s arrival will help revive Downtown.

“The Target location is going to be a great addition to the retail mix,” Pittsburgh Downtown Partnership President Jeremy Waldrup has said. “With its smaller urban footprint, they are going to zero in on the Downtown office worker and resident and hopefully drive additional traffic into Downtown.”

About 10,000 to 15,000 square feet of space remain on the first floor of the building and discussions with other retailers to occupy it are underway, Lubert Adler said.
