A street in Bridgeville has been named after lifelong resident Mary Weise.

Welcome to Weise Way.

The narrow thoroughfare connecting McMillen and Chartiers streets in Bridgeville had no name until Nov. 14, when borough council adopted an ordinance to honor a lifelong resident.

Whether she was serving ice cream at the family grocery store or serving two decades on council, Mary Weise has been a local fixture for as long as anyone can remember.

Into her 90s, Weise has continued her longtime role as president of the Bridgeville Area Historical Society, “remaining as a driving force in its mission to uncover, discover, preserve and keep alive the rich history of the families, residents and local businesses,” according to the ordinance, which recognizes her “for the inspirational example and high bar that she continues to set for herself and fellow residents, alike.”

Located in the former site of the Penn Central Railroad Station and Bridgeville Public Library on Station Street, the historical society acquires and preserves maps, pictures, family and business histories, and other items of relevant historical value.

Each year, the society hosts eight to 10 presentations on a variety of topics, offered free to the public, in the Chartiers Room at the Bridgeville Volunteer Fire Department. The next program is at 1:30 p.m. Jan. 29, with local historian John Oyler presenting “Early Railroads in the Chartiers Valley.”
