Construction fatigued Pittsburghers will have another road project and accompanying detour to look out for this weekend.

PennDOT has announced the closure of the westbound I-376 (Parkway East) ramp to northbound Boulevard of the Allies from Friday at 8 p.m. continuously through 5:30 a.m. Monday morning. All ramp traffic will be detoured.

A detour will be posted rerouting traffic through Edgewood/Swissvale, back through the Squirrel Hill Tunnel and Oakland.

“This entire interchange is in need of substantial improvements,” PennDOT spokesman Steve Cowan said.

The major improvement project includes preservation work on two mainline Boulevard of the Allies bridges and several ramps at the interchange. The work also includes bridge deck repairs and overlays, expansion dam replacements, steel superstructure and substructure repairs and drainage repairs.

Other work next week

PennDOT is also announcing overnight ramp closures at the I-376/Boulevard of the Allies interchange will happen Monday through Thursday nights, weather permitting.

The closure of the southbound — outbound — Boulevard of the Allies ramp to eastbound (outbound) Parkway East will happen from 8 p.m. to 5:30 a.m. each night. Crews are set to perform miscellaneous construction work.

Ramp traffic will be detoured on the Boulevard of the Allies southbound past the closed ramp onto Bates Street, and onto the ramp to the Parkway East toward Monroeville.

Penguins game traffic

The closure won’t begin until two hours after the end of the Pittsburgh Penguins game on Tuesday night.

Long range plans call for other short-term lane closures, night and weekend closures of the ramps and the Boulevard of the Allies in each direction, weekend lane restrictions and overnight directional closures of the Parkway East, long-term closures of Forbes Avenue, Brady Street and ramps at the Birmingham Bridge.

Motorists can also expect short-term and weeknight lane closures of Second Avenue as part of the multi-year project costing more than $35 million.
