Bishop David Zubik on Monday successfully underwent surgery to address ongoing issues he has had with collapsing discs, the Catholic Diocese of Pittsburgh said.
“According to his surgeon, everything went as planned,” officials said in a news release. “There were no complications,”
He was treated at UPMC Mercy Hospital in Uptown.
This was Zubik’s fifth back surgery. In 2010, the bishop underwent surgery to repair a herniated disc, which was followed by surgery for a similar but separate issue nine months later. He also underwent surgery in February to repair a “significant tear” in his left shoulder and biceps.
Zubik, 72, will now been taking some time for recovery, which will keep him from public appearances in the short term. During recovery, Zubik still should be able to conduct business from his offices in Pittsburgh’s West End.
