Those who were looking to book an appointment to receive part of the state’s limited supply of the covid-19 vaccination at Allegheny County’s second dispensary will have to wait.

Online registration for the new site began at 9 a.m. Saturday, and appointments were filled within 10 minutes, according to county spokeswoman Amie Downs. The Castle Shannon site will open 9 a.m. Tuesday.

Further showing the demand from those who want the shot, traffic on the website crashed the landing page for a “short period of time, but has since been restored,” Downs said.

More than five hours after the appointments were filled, county officials said phones at Castle Shannon Fire Department “have been ringing off the hook” from people who are still seeking to schedule the shots.

Officials stressed that personnel at the fire house cannot help, and calling the station will not ensure scheduling an appointment.

Registration is for those who are 65 and over. Those under that age attempting to register will not be permitted to do so.

The county has set aside slots for people in that demographic who do not have internet access.

They can register by phone beginning 9 a.m. Tuesday by dialing 2-1-1.

Additional appointments will be made when the supply increases, Downs said.

Appointments at both the Monroeville and Castle Shannon locations are required. There are no walk-in vaccinations offered.

Shots at these locations are allotted from the county Health Department’s supply. The department receives about 11% of the vaccine shipped to providers in the county.
