An Allegheny County Jail inmate died Thursday just days after being booked, according jail officials.

A 60-year-old man, who’s name has not been released, was brought in by a local police department on a bench warrant for retail theft from another county and booked on Monday, the jail report read.

Allegheny County officials said a drug screen was administered to the man, and it indicated the presence of opiates, including fentanyl, cocaine, and other drugs. He was then put through a detox protocol by the jail’s health care staff.

The man, was found unresponsive around 4 p.m. by correctional staff.

Officials said correctional and healthcare staff members performed CPR until paramedics arrived. He was declared dead at about 4:30 p.m. The jail notified the man’s emergency contact.

The Allegheny County Medical Examiner’s Office is expected to release his name as well as the cause and manner of death.

Allegheny County Police are investigating and the jail administration is reviewing the incident.

Officials said the last death at the facility, a natural death, occurred last September .
