Allegheny County hits lowest covid hospitalization number since November, adds 35 deaths

Covid-19 patient hospitalizations in Allegheny County decreased by 27 on Wednesday, bringing the total to 249, the lowest since Nov. 11.

According to the state’s covid-19 dashboard, there are currently 249 coronavirus patients hospitalized in the county. For perspective, there were 542 patients hospitalized a month ago (Jan. 10) and 846 two months ago (Dec. 10).

The county has 1,187 ventilators, with 295 in use, 23 by covid-19 patients. There are 67 coronavirus patients in Allegheny County ICUs, with 18.5% of county ICU beds available.

The Allegheny County Health Department added 35 deaths to bring the county’s total to 1,564, attributing some of the numbers to data imported by the state from the Electronic Death Reporting System. The deaths ranged from Dec. 10 to Feb. 9, with three in December, 10 in January and 22 in February.

The ages of those who died were one in their 40s, one in their 50s, four in their 60s, eight in their 70s, 13 in their 80s, seven in their 90s, and one in their 100s, with 12 of the deaths associated with long-term care facilities.

The state’s health department reported eight new deaths in the county, bringing its total to 1,608. The discrepancy between the two health departments has yet to be fully explained.

The health department added 239 new covid cases — 118 confirmed and 121 probable — from 852 new PCR tests. The county’s total now sits at 72,177.

The cases range from Dec. 17 to Feb. 9, with six of those tests more than a week old, including one from December and two from January. The new cases — 125 female and 114 male — range from 10 months to 104 years old with a median age of 36. Here’s how they break down by age:
