Allegheny Health Network’s president and CEO has been recognized as a top leader in the health care industry.

Cynthia Hundorfean, who has held AHN’s top spot since 2016, was named one of 2020’s 100 most influential people by Modern Healthcare magazine. It’s the second year in a row she has been recognized by the Chicago-based publication.

“I am honored to be included on this list,” Hundorfean said in a news release. “This award reflects the hard work and dedication of all AHN employees, who have helped to transform this organization and provide outstanding care for our patients even while responding to an unprecedented public health crisis.”

Over the years the list has named prominent leaders from across the country like elected officials, government appointees, health system CEOs, insurance industry presidents, representatives from retail health care and more.

The complete list for 2020 can be found online at modernhealthcare.com/100mostinfluential.

Aurora Aguilar, Modern Healthcare editor, said that as a result of the coronavirus pandemic, 2020 “is a year that reminded us of the importance of the front line health care worker and the power of collaboration. Every member of this class found ways to help their organization or the government or each other maneuver through unprecedented hardships.”

She added that those who made the list “influenced the course that health care took during a global pandemic, continued to press forward amid uncertainty, and used current events like the election and racial injustice as an inspiration to do better.”

At Allegheny Health Network, Hundorfean leads a 13-hospital, $3.5 billion heath network with more than 20,000 employees.

In her four years holding the leading role, Hundorfean has lead AHN to open four neighborhood hospitals — among them locations in Brentwood, Hempfield and Harmar — six cancer centers, two outpatient Health + Wellness Pavilions and two expanded emergency rooms.

Last year Hundorfean was named one of Modern Healthcare’s Top 25 Women Leaders.

“We are thrilled that Modern Healthcare has identified Cindy as one of the nation’s most influential leaders,” David Blandino, chair of AHN’s board of directors, said in the news release. “AHN, and the many patients and Western Pennsylvania communities this network serves, are fortunate to have her.”
