It’s the first full weekend of 2023 and if one of your goals this year is to run the Dick’s Sporting Goods Pittsburgh Marathon, it’s a good time to begin your training.
Dick’s Sporting Goods Pittsburgh Marathon Training Session
Saturday marks the official start of Marathon Weekend Training. There will be two distances to choose from: a 5K (3.1 miles) or a 10K (6.2 miles) and different paces to choose from. And organizers are finding ways to make it fun with a DJ, post run refreshments, giveaways and a pop-up 4RUN2 store.
Pacers from Steel City Road Runners, City of Bridges Run Club, Pittsburgh Rogue Runners, and Fleet Feet Pittsburgh Run Club will be on hand, and even those not registered for a 2023 marathon weekend event can participate. Check-in begins at 7 a.m., and the run begins at 8:30 a.m. at Pittsburgh Three Rivers Marathon (P3R) headquarters at 810 River Ave. on the North Side. “Hairspray” at the Benedum Center
The Tony Award-winning musical comedy “Hairspray” continues its run at the Benedum Center Downtown through this weekend. It’s the story of a 16-year-old girl named Tracy Turnblad whose dream is to dance on a popular 1960s Baltimore TV dance show. Familiar songs such as “Welcome to the 60s,” “Good Morning Baltimore” and “You Can’t Stop the Beat” are part of the new touring production. The show is based on John Waters’s film of the same name and runs for 2 hours 30 minutes with intermission. Call 412-456-4800 for ticket information.
Scary film festival
January means Januscary at the Harris Theater Downtown. It’s the second annual Januscary Film Festival, which opens Friday with screenings of the scary movies “Slash/Back” and “Kids Vs. Aliens.” “Slash/Back” features a group of teen girls who use makeshift weapons to battle an alien invasion in their village. “Kids vs. Aliens” is the story of siblings joining forces to fight aliens threatening planet earth. If by Sunday you’re in need of some comic relief, there will be a double feature starring big-screen comedy duo Bud Abbott and Lou Costello. First up it’s “Abbott and Costello Meet Frankenstein” followed by “Abbott and Costello Meet the Mummy.”

Pittsburgh RV Show
If it’s January, it must be time for the Pittsburgh RV Show at the David L. Lawrence Convention Center. Now in its 56th year, it’s billed as the longest running indoor RV show in the country. It all kicks off Saturday at 10 a.m. and runs until 9 p.m. and continues through Jan. 16. In all, the show features nine acres of RVs and products related to campgrounds and home accessories.

Luenell at Pittsburgh Improv
Los Angeles Magazine hailed her as “one of the top 25 funniest people in LA,” and this weekend, the comedienne brings her stand-up to the Pittsburgh Improv at Homestead’s Waterfront. Folks may remember Luenell from “Borat,” as well as “Always Sunny in Philadelphia,” “Snoop Dog’s Bad Girls of Comedy” and “Taken 2.” Tickets are still available for the 9:45 p.m. show on Friday and the 9:30 p.m. Saturday.
