A man early Monday killed both the woman with whom he had been in a long-term relationship and her new boyfriend in Scott before killing himself on a West Virginia highway, authorities said.

Police were called to the 1300 block of Great Oak Drive for a welfare check at 2:50 a.m.

Officers found William Rabatin, 53, of Scott and Christy Reeves, 50, dead from gunshot wounds. The two had recently begun a relationship, said Allegheny County Police Lt. Venerando Costa.

Reeves was in the process of ending a relationship with the suspect, identified by investigators as Dennis Rahuba, Costa said.

Rahuba, 50, went to Rabatin’s home on Great Oak Drive, Costa said, just before 3 a.m., entering through an unlocked rear door.

He said Rahuba shot both victims and fled in a black Acura.

Costa said that Rahuba contacted his adult children and told them what happened. They were the ones who called 911.

Investigators were able to obtain Rahuba’s cell phone number, and a county detective, who also works as a negotiator, called him on the phone, Costa said.

In the meantime, police issued a notice to other law enforcement agencies to watch for for the Acura.

Around 7 a.m., deputies from the Kanawha County Sheriff’s office in West Virginia said they spotted the car heading south on Interstate 77 at Big Chimney.

According to the sheriff’s office, multiple deputies and other officers attempted to conduct a traffic stop at the Westmoreland exit.

The officers immediately shut down the interstate and surrounded Rahuba’s vehicle.

Deputy J.A. Morris ordered Rahuba to step out, the sheriff’s office said, and then heard a single gunshot.

The sheriff’s office deployed an armored vehicle to the scene and shut the highway down to all traffic before SWAT officers approached. They confirmed Rahuba was dead from a self-inflicted gunshot wound, the sheriff’s office said.

The investigation remains active.
