Serra Catholic student killed in school van crash in Dravosburg
A 15-year-old girl was killed Wednesday in a school van crash in Dravosburg, authorities said.
The Allegheny County Medical Examiner’s Office identified the girl as Samantha Lee Kalkbrenner of Dravosburg.
Three other juveniles, all students at Serra Catholic High School in McKeesport, were injured and taken to a hospital in stable condition, authorities said. Their injuries did not appear to be life-threatening. Two men were taken to area hospitals in critical condition, Allegheny County Police said.
“As we move forward as a school community, let us pray for the life that was lost and for her family, friends and loved ones,” Serra Catholic said in a message to the school community.
“The Serra Catholic school community is close-knit, and this has deeply impacted many,” added Jennifer Antkowiak, spokeswoman for the Catholic Diocese of Pittsburgh. “The principal, president, staff, teachers and the school chaplain, along with the diocesan school superintendent and assistant superintendent, have been working to comfort school families and each other.”
“At a time like this, we become aware of how precious life is and how important it is to support each other not only during tragedy but always,” Bishop David Zubik said.
Serra Catholic said it is canceling classes and school activities through Sunday. Teachers and grief counselors will be at the school from 7:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Thursday for any students who would like to talk, and a prayer service will held on campus at 7 p.m. Thursday,
The crash happened around 7:30 a.m. near the Mansfield Bridge.
Police said a Serra Catholic van trying to turn left onto Richland Avenue was struck by a car traveling north on Richland.
Allegheny County Homicide and Collision Reconstruction Units are investigating.
