Emergency responders were dispatched to the scene of head-on collision between a minivan and a cement truck in the city’s South Side Slopes neighborhood this morning, according to authorities.

Two people had to be extracted from the van following the crash, which occurred at the intersection of South 18th and Crossman streets shortly before 7:30 a.m., Pittsburgh police said.

The lone passenger in the minivan was pronounced dead at the scene. The driver of the van had to be extracted by medics before being transported to a local hospital in critical condition.

The driver of the cement truck was able to get out on his own, police said. He was taken to the hospital in stable condition.

Police shut down South 18th Street in both directions while the department’s Collision Investigation Unit works to determine a cause for the crash.
