A section of Irvine Street in the city’s Hazelwood neighborhood is receiving new sidewalks and curbs in a $1.1 million project that began Monday, city officials said.

The section of road, between Greenfield and Hazelwood avenues, is just under a mile long. The project will replace sidewalks that are in disrepair and improve pedestrian safety.

Construction is beginning on the north end of the section, near Greenfield Avenue, and is expected to be completed by December.

The project is being funded through the state Department of Community and Economic Development and with American Rescue Plan money.

Officials said Irvine will not close during construction. Parts of one northbound lane will be closed when needed, but the road will remain open to two-way traffic for the duration of the project.

Access to all bus stops in the area also will be maintained.
