Out & About: Westmoreland Symphony brings it 'Home for the Holidays'
Westmoreland Symphony Orchestra’s annual “Home for the Holidays” program is always a special treat.
This year’s concert, held Dec. 21 in Greensburg’s Palace Theatre, featured the usual — the orchestra, a guest soloist and a choir of area high school students — along with an extra special element: a world premiere.
Under the direction of guest conductor Maria Sensi Sellner, soprano Meghan DeWald sang “For Behold From Henceforth,” by Nancy Galbraith, chair of composition and professor at the Carnegie Mellon University School of Music.
The text of the piece is taken from the Gospel of Luke.
DeWald also sang other selections including “Hanukkah Medley” and joined the All-Star Choir of Westmoreland County for “White Christmas” and the inspiring finale, Handel’s “Hallelujah Chorus.”
The upbeat program included traditional favorites like “Jingle Bells” and “Sleigh Ride,” and an audience sing-along featuring “Deck the Halls” and three Christmas hymns.
The All-Star Choir comprises 60 students from Belle Vernon, Burrell, Derry Area, Greensburg Salem, Ligonier Valley and Monessen high schools, under the direction of Derry Area High School choral teacher Melody Vigo.
Jason Neukom served as concertmaster, while WSO Executive Director Endy Reindl greeted guests in a Santa hat and lent a hand on percussion for one number.
Seen at The Palace: Joy Carroll, Scott and Louise Henry, Tim and Diane Rennie, George Shaner and Michael Philopena, Barbara Ferrier, Ann Miles, Deborah Hines, Lupe Stiteler, Dave and Debbie Tirdil, Bruce and Kim Palmiscno, Don and Donna Davis and Ron and Amy Notovich.
