Tajz-Mahal Makerspace opens in Connellsville library

A Scottdale woman will continue her late son’s mission with this week’s opening of the Tajz-Mahal Makerspace in Connellsville’s Carnegie Free Library.

Earlier this summer, Antonette Dues began fund raising for the nonprofit organization she has established in her son Tajz Dues’ memory: Tajz’s Hope Foundation.

Dues, 28, died on June 7, 2018, while at his job, caring for adults with disabilities.

“I am their voice, and they need me,” Antonette Dues recalls him telling her. “Tajz had always been concerned about others. I am inspired to continue his work and help those who need a voice, as well,” she says.

One mission Dues is realizing with the organization is the newly founded namesake art and learning center.

An 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. open house will be held Aug. 15 at the library, 299 S. Pittsburgh St. The event will feature sign-ups for various classes, including art, writing, consumer skills and more, based on interest, Dues says, along with light refreshments.

Classes are expected to begin this fall, she says. “It probably will be an after-school program to start.”

Adult programs likely will be offered during the evening or on weekends.

An art instructor with Connellsville Area High School, she and other teachers and volunteers look forward to continuing a vision Dues sees as “imperative for our community.”

Dues sees the arts as a way for students to understand other academics as well.

“When I teach my art classes, I’m teaching science, reinforcing what (other teachers) are doing and giving (students) another avenue to learn. We do ratios, fractions, with art projects,” she says.

The faith-based center will offer room for adults and children of all ages and abilities to spend time together , she says. Anyone interested in volunteering to help with the center’s curriculum may contact Dues.
