Depleted GAR post to disband
The Grand Army of the Republic, Post 495 of Natrona will disband after 28 years. General Thomas Rowley said “41 members have been called by death” and suspensions, disabilities and transfers have depleted the post to 10 members.

New Ken youth is credited with saving 8
Coast guardsman Mike Woncheck of Fourth Avenue, New Kensington has been credited by naval doctors with having saved the lives of at least eight Marines wounded on Iwo Jima. With the LST ship’s hospital full, Wonckeck set up a sick bay in the crew’s quarters.

Hoss to receive death penalty
An Allegheny County jury has ruled that convicted murderer Stanley B. Hoss, 27, receive death in the electric chair after being convicted of the killing of Verona Patrolman Joseph Zanella. The murder set off several weeks of terror while Hoss was on the loose.

Former Union Spring plant gives way to development
Partial demolition of New Kensington’s for Union Spring and Manufacturing plant will result in a multi-million riverfront development. Lighthouse Landing will be built on 4.3 acres along the Allegheny River between the Ninth Street bridge and Seventh Street.

House OKs $10 million for local roads
The U.S. House allotted $10 million for A-K Valley projects. There was $2 million appropriated to rebuild the Freeport bridge spanning the Allegheny River and $1.65 million to tack on an addition lane along Route 28 between the Harmar and Creighton exits.

Groundbreaking takes place at former Edgewater site
Work began on a $100 million development project that would turn the former Edgewater Steel Co. site in Oakmont into a residential complex on the 34-acre site. Plans call for 240 homes of various sizes.

Bucs’ Bordonaro not enough
Despite a career-high 36 points from senior guard Sydney Bordonaro, Burrell dropped a 59-53 decision to Bellwood-Antis in the second round of the PIAA Class AA playoffs. Burrell compiled a 74-11 record during Bordonaro’s four seasons with the Bucs.
