New $17K pool to be dedicated
Plans have been completed for the dedicating of a new, $17,000 natatorium built by the Summit Hose Co. in the organization’s West Seventh avenue engine house. The pool will be 30 by 70 feet and will be 4 feet at its greatest depth.

Pizer gets Bronze Star
Pvt. David Pizer of Colfax street, Springdale, has been awarded the Bronze Star for “his display of outstanding valor” under fire during the battle near Selestat, France. A brother, Ray, is now with American forces fighting in Belgium.

Leechburg mustaches must go
Directors of Leechburg Area School Board voted to uphold the school’s dress code, which prohibits male students from attending classes with beards or mustaches. Two of three affected students have complied.

Robicon moves to Upper Burrell
Halmar Robicon Group of Plum plans to open a 120,000-square-foot facility at the Westmoreland Research and Business Park in Upper Burrell. The electronics firm is expected to employ 320 at the new facility.

New Ken priest ordained at 73 dies
The Rev. James Spezzano, 80, ordained as a Roman Catholic priest at age 73 in 1997, had his life celebrated at a Mass at Mount St. Peter’s Church, New Kensington. Before his calling, he owned Spezzano’s Market in Arnold.

Mason’s 29 leads Highlands
Sophomore Micah Mason poured in 29 points as Highlands won a nonsection game at Blackhawk, 77-71. Mason was 9 of 10 from the foul line in the fourth quarter.

Kiski Area accepts Meighan’s resignation
Kiski Area School District Superintendent John Meighan, 62, will retire at the end of the school year. Meighan, in his 12th year as the superintendent, began his teaching career in 1974 at Kiski Area, his alma mater.
