Borough official prevents wreck

Tarentum Council President A.B. Davidson discovered a broken rail on a railroad bridge crossing Bull Creek near Ross Street. Trains, including a passenger train, were halted until repairs could be made.

Santora dies in the Pacific

Seaman First Class Anthony Santora of New Kensington drowned in the line of duty somewhere in the Pacific, according to a Navy telegram. His remains were buried in an Allied cemetery on an island in the South Pacific.

Kiski erases big deficit

Down by 23 points at halftime, Kiski Area scored 61 points in the second half to down Deer Lakes, 84-82. Bob Noble led the Cavaliers with 32 points, 30 coming in the second half.

New Ken civic leader Blissell dies

Longtime New Kensington activist Elisabeth G. “Libby” Blissell died at 84. She was the New Ken Area Chamber of Commerce director from 1938-77 and served on the People’s Library and Penn State boards, among many other groups.

Harmar planning board OKs mall plan

The site plan for the proposed Deer Creek Crossing mall was approved by the Harmar Planning Commission. The $124 million, 260-acre mall would border the Pennsylvania Turnpike and Route 28, bisected by Route 910.

Health network to close cardiac rehab unit

The West Penn Allegheny Health System announced the closing of the Allegheny Valley Hospital cardiac rehabilitation unit as part of a system-wide cutback of services. The unit was treating 46 patients.

North Apollo Council fills vacancies

Following the deaths of Mayor Ed Artman and Councilman President Ed Barclay, North Apollo Council named Denny McCain as the new mayor and Patrick Ellenberger to the vacant council seat.
