5,580 youngsters get Christmas sweets

New Kensington city hall on Fourth Avenue was the site of Community Christmas tree exercises where 5,850 boxes of candy were distributed to children. The Moose Lodge 53 band entertained at the holiday program.

Rural school still snowbound

West Winfield consolidated school in Butler County is still snowbound and motoring throughout that area is still hazardous. Many roads are filled with snow drifts that bulldozers had to be called out to break their way through.

Robbers get stamps, cash in postal holdup

More than $10,000 in stamps and $200 in cash were taken from the Indianola Post Office during an armed robbery by two masked men. Three female employees were handcuffed and bound to a table while the bandits got away in a rented truck.

Armstrong hospital to lay off 100, cut others pay

About 100 Armstrong County Memorial Hospital employees will be laid off and all workers there remaining face a 5 percent pay cut. The layoffs amount to about 20 percent of the hospital’s 500 full-time employees.

Another gold coin lands in kettle

Someone gave the Tarentum branch of the Salvation Army an expensive gold coin for the second straight year. The coin, worth about $500, was dropped in a kettle outside the Giant Eagle store in the Waterworks Mall.

Alle-Kiski to lose 4 bus routes

Four Alle-Kiski Valley bus routes will be discontinued under a Port Authority reorganization plan. The routes are: 3L between Creighton and Lower Burrell; 3M between Natrona and Tarentum; 93A from Aspinwall to Cheswick and the Allegheny Valley North Flyer.

3 make all-state team

Three local football players were named to the PA Football Writers All-State team. Tre Tipton of Apollo-Ridge is on the Class 2A team, Nick Bowers of Kittanning is on the 3A team and Lower Burrell native Johnny Petrishen of Central Catholic is on the Class 4A team.
