Could your Stanley travel mug be dangerous?

About 2.6 million of Stanley’s switchback and trigger action stainless steel travel mugs sold in the U.S. have been recalled due to a burn hazard, according to the Consumer Product Safety Commission.

The mugs’ lid threads can shrink when exposed to heat and torque, which causes the lid to detach during use — causing a burn threat to the person drinking from the mug, the commission said.

The recall was issued on Dec. 12, and the commission said consumers should immediately stop using the products. A free replacement lid can be acquired by contacting Stanley.

Stanley said the recall includes double-walled mugs sold in colors including white, black and green, and in 12 oz., 16 oz. and 20 oz. sizes with a polypropylene lid, the Associated Press reported. The Stanley logo appears on the front and bottom of the mug, according to the AP.

There were 91 reports worldwide that Stanley received — 16 of which were in the U.S. — of the lids detaching during use, according to the commission. There were 38 burn injuries worldwide, including two in the U.S., and 11 consumers needed medical attention worldwide, the commission reported.

The mugs in the recall were sold at Amazon, Walmart, Dick’s Sporting Goods, Target and other stores between June 2016 and December 2024, and they were between $20 and $50, the commission said.

Consumers can call 866-792-5445 from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday or go online to submit a recall claim or get more information.
